July July July.....

Song: "The Beginning is the End is the Beginning" by the smashing pumpkins.

I heard this song in the trailer for "The Watchmen" when I saw the dark night, and I kinda liked it. I used to be really into the smashing pumpkins and it had been a while since I'd listened to them. Its kind of fitting since there's a big storm headed our way tonight with a possibility of tornadoes....

Less than two weeks until I head off on my month long vacation in southeast Asia. I should be getting my passport back soon with all my visas+extra pages.
I also bought a Canon G9 the other day and have been having a lot of fun with the time lapse feature. We're still on that crazy money job (4 days down, 4 to go), but its kinda nice to 5 hours in the morning to prepare for the big trip coming up. I'll probably do a new blog for that one, I have a lot of cool ideas for it that should make it more entertaining to read. I'm bringing a laptop so I'll be able to edit videos and post frequently.

I went to Brass Monkey last night with a couple of industry friends, and I cant believe how big the new standard hotel is going to be. It has a reputation of being a photo industry hotel (I've stayed at the ones in LA and Miami several times), but this definitely is a different approach for them.

Its a weird time to be in New York because the weather is so terrible and everyone is going a thousand feet per second. Once August hits it slows down, but I'm still excited to do a big vacation. I'll post a link to the new blog as August 3rd gets closer.....

Hace Calor

Song: Sultans of Swing by Dire Straights

That means its hot in spanish. no big deal. This song has that desperado kinda theme that makes it appropriate for the rooftop shoot we did yesterday, during the 95 degree day. We setup on the black tar coated roof (yes, that made it even hotter) and tried to occupy ourselves with some light tests while we waited for hair and makeup to finish.

I went and saw a late showing of the dark knight the previous evening, which ended at 2:30 in the morning. Good movie by the way. Actually really good. I ended up sleeping at the office since I had to be at work 4 hours from then, so I was stuck wearing jeans for the next day. Rough.

Some of my friends and I are obsessed with this youtube video called "Do your best Jagger" or "The Jag-Off." I prefer the latter.
Jag off Video

Succumbing to heat stroke, I decided to have a mini-Jag-off by myself, or just jagged myself off. Friends were alienated, onlookers from adjacent rooftops were horrified, and the overall temperature of the day was raised about 3 degrees Fahrenheit. I guess I should have made today's song "Sympathy for the Devil" by the rolling stones. Might have been more appropriate.

LINKS

Bored in studio as usual, so here are a few links to sites I've been into lately

Gowanus Lounge

-The gothamist of brooklyn. Good local stuff as well as new from some Brooklyn neighborhoods I've yet to spend time in.

Photoshop Disasters

-A great one for anyone who appreciates the absurd world of retouching.

Guest of a Guest
-A social events blog that doesn't have too much crap about celebritys. Good articles and they're currently fighting with some dirty hipster which I appreciate.

The Unofficial Apple Weblog

-For the dorkier crowd....this site is better than the rumor sites because it has more reviews and focuses less on the "apple to release dual sided touch screen tablet with built in iphone dock and 2 terabyte hard drive tomorrow" rumors.

Missed Connections

-The craigslist missed connections postings are hilarious, and theres hundreds of them a day. Plus its a good pass time for the more self absorbed crowd (apparently I fall into that category)

Welcome to how I spend the 4 hours waiting for hair and makeup. That, and of course, light tests....

The most beautiful suicide

So I found a link to a kottke.org post that had an amazing picture from a suicide in 1947. A 23 year old woman jumped off the empire state building, landing on the roof of a car. The picture was taken just a few minutes after her death.

"On May Day, just after leaving her fiancé, 23-year-old Evelyn McHale wrote a note. 'He is much better off without me ... I wouldn't make a good wife for anybody,' ... Then she crossed it out. She went to the observation platform of the Empire State Building. Through the mist she gazed at the street, 86 floors below. Then she jumped. In her desperate determination she leaped clear of the setbacks and hit a United Nations limousine parked at the curb. Across the street photography student Robert Wiles heard an explosive crash. Just four minutes after Evelyn McHale's death Wiles got this picture of death's violence and its composure."

Last three weeks of work...

Song: Modern Guilt by Beck

I'm at milk for the next 12 days straight. Remember that big money job I posted about a few months ago? Oh its back with a vengeance. For 7 days. Starting this Sunday. Also I got glasses.

We did a fragrance ad at night last week that was pretty cool, and we also had a korean job earlier this week. For those of you who don't know about "the Korean Jobs," its definitely a pretty mafioso affair. You show up at the location, set up, shoot all day based off of story boards with minimal direction and usually no idea what company you are shooting for. You shoot and shoot and then they all smile and clap and you move to the next shot. The gangster part comes at the end of the day when the bust out the suitcase full of 100 dollar bills and pay everyone in cash.

Tens of thousands of dollars just divvied up without much being said.
Then you give them a hard drive with all the images and you never hear from them again. Then you go buy awesome stuff with all your crisp new Benjamin's. I'm going for a Canon G9 and an iphone 3g. Providing I can get the latter. the lines at the apple store are still 50+ people deep and its way too hot to be standing in a line just to get a new phone. Dicks.

The song is off the new Beck album which, as usual, is really good. I'm a fan of Beck, and any artists that made a special appearance on Futurama for that matter. I also like the Beastie Boys.

Vogue in Mallorca

Song: "Electric Feel" by MGMT off the album Oracular Spectacular

Note: click on the panoramic images to enlarge....

First of all, this album is ridiculous. Buy it. Its really good. You're on your computer. you have itunes. Why are you still reading this?

Anyways, we did a vogue shoot recently in Mallorca Spain which is an island off the southeast of the Spanish coast. Four day shoot, two stories, three shoot days. Quite typical for our traveling vogue shoots. The assistant and I flew out late one evening to Zurich and had a 4 hour layover before our flight to the island. The flight to Switzerland departed right at sunset which I always enjoy and, per usual, one glass of bourbon and I was out like a light.
After I also managed to sleep all the way through our layover in Switzerland (much to the assistant's chagrin and despite drinking two espressos) we boarded our german tourist filled jet and made the short trip to Mallorca. I slept the whole way.

Arriving in the late afternoon, I cruised quickly through customs with my 9 cases and literally felt the cobwebs being scraped from the part of my brain that contains the fragmented memory of 4 years of spanish classes. They looked confused at the complex official documents that make up the counterfoil and reimportation papers of a carnet, but after a few minutes of my terribly accented attempts to convey the actual simplicity of the whole process, they signed, stamped and sent us on our way.

We were met outside by our local PA, who was a tall soft-spoken man that had moved here from Germany a few years prior. We loaded the 17 bags into his dark blue Eurovan and lumbered onto the freeway that led to our hotel. We wound through the narrow streets of the city that were framed with brightly colored buildings and barely left enough room for our oversized car to fit through.

Upon arrival we found that it was nearly dinner time, and a hotel staff more than willing to help us with our copious amount of baggage. I immediately left to explore the downtown, only to receive a phone call from my favorite prop stylist saying that dinner was in half an hour. I did a 180, went back to my hotel, showered and went straight to dinner.

Meeting up with this crew is always like a family reunion. Family that may or may not consist of alcoholics. Per usual with these shoots (If the blog about Miami a few months ago you might have an idea of how we like to spend the evenings on these shoots) we ordered a number of bottles of wine that went well into the teens, and followed the tradition of our photographer who has a penchant for toasts. I believe that by the end of this trip I made a total of 15 toasts, the superior being "To a job that is better than most vacations." At least thats the only one I remember.

The first shoot day was a mildly hungover one, and we did a paparazzi style story all around the streets. I went quickly, the imagery was beautiful, and it was filled with good light tests and bizarre encounters with prostitutes (long story). I even managed to capture my general awkwardness around models in a three picture series. Note: I really like this blog called the failblog (http://failblog.org). If you haven't ever read it, I suggest it....it always gives me a good laugh.

The next day our model wasn't scheduled to arrive until 11 am, so we had a late call time before we headed to this beautiful sailboat we were shooting on for the next two days.

The shoot was the classic story of a yatching couple and we did 9 shots from 1pm to 7 pm before heading back to the hotel. I love these shoots because we try to keep the pace slow, and the vibe relaxed, and we continued that trend throughout the boat story.
We dined on cured meats, olives, and saffron infused seafood and drank mojitos in-between shots. That night we went out to a sushi restaurant and kept the alcohol bill to about 60 euros per person. I fail to remember what time we got home.

The next morning we headed back out to the boat around 10 to finish our remaining 6 shots. We drove out of the bay and along the coast for about an hour and a half before being escorted by dolphins and anchoring off the rocky shoreline among aquamarine sand patches and emerald grass patches on the ocean bed.

I immediately flipped off the side of the boat into the water which, despite being the Mediterranean, wasn't as warm as you'd imagine.
I swam for 20 minutes and dove down to the grass bed with a snorkel and mask, but no one else decided to join me. We did some great shots in the early afternoon, one included hoisting the photographer 35 feet up the mast.

We finished shooting around 4 and spent the rest of the time sipping mojitos and laying in the sun. On the ride back everyone hustled to pack everything and finish our work so we could enjoy the last night in Spain.

Speaking of that last night in Spain, it pretty much never ended. Being that I had to head to the airport at 5:30 am, not to mention pack up all the gear I'd set up over the past three days, I decided not to go to bed that night. Unfortunately I forgot to take into account the heavy and drinking that usually occurs on the wrap night and my hour long task of packing up and preparing files turned into two hours of me bumping into things, misplacing items I needed, and watching the sun rise with my now dwindling supply of cigarettes. The hair stylist had to leave around 4:30 so I hung out with him for quite a while as he joined me in my quest to stay awake despite getting an average of 4 hours of sleep each night we were here. We left for the airport with "plenty" of time according to our producer and were on our way home.

At about this point I sent the assistant up to get ready to check in while I tried to deal with the carnet. This proved to be very difficult when you're drunk, exhausted and speak Spanish about as well as you can perform a gel electrophoresis (I studied Biology in college FYI). After 45 minutes of arguing with all the gate security who didn't understand that I needed to get BACK through security to get my papers signed, I enlisted the help of a suspicious police officer who helped me convince them that I knew what I was doing. After the strip search (I really don't want to talk about it) I rushed to the customs office, forced them to sign it ASAP (I'd gotten very good at explaining my cause by now) and ran as fast as I could upstairs to check it. Surprise, we'd missed out flight. Things got a bit hazy after this, as I kept falling asleep standing up, and the assistant (who'd been sleeping while I was dealing with customs) took the reigns and got us new flights back to NYC. Special shout out to the paris office of our photographers agency.....you saved our asses that day. Everything after that was perfectly smooth...almost as smooth as this mural we found while eating breakfast.
Upon arrival in Madrid, we ran into the photographer who was utterly shocked to see us (especially since we were supposed to leave Mallorca 4 hours earlier than him) and was even more hungover than I was. The flight back was pretty hazy, but I do remember waking up briefly to a plate of foi gras and nearly vomiting. Upon arrival back in NYC customs was ridiculously easy, with a customs officer I can only dream of having every time I have a carnet. After that it was back to the office (now around 9 pm) so I could finally sleep horizontally before waking up at 6 am the next morning for our next job. Thank god I'm just getting off a vacation because from here on out we are booked every day till August 2nd. And I leave August third for a month long backpacking vacation through eastern Asia. Expect some good stories in the near future. And buy that MGMT album for gods sake.

government innuendos....

Song: Cut Copy -Lights and Music

So we shot a lovely 13 hour, page spread for a fashion magazine yesterday with some very political themed imagery. The celebrity was a bit crazy but took it all in stride despite the huge cast of extras, extremely hot temperatures, and probably 50 people on set watch the photo shoot/video filming. I didn't sleep at all last night either as I flew back to seattle this morning for my vacation. Maybe I'll actually catch up on posts this week.....Here are a few pretty cool light tests I got at yesterday's shoot though....

ugh....almost vacation

I had a 15 hour day today that included a lingere shoot and a celebrity cover shoot (at a different location) that lasted till 11:45. 7 am call time tomorrow for the celebrity fashion story. 8 pm wrap. Damn I can't wait to go to Newark at 5 am on saturday. Thank god for long semi-coma sleeping plane flights.

long week ahead

We're ridiculously busy this week.....even doing two shoots in one day on thursday. Then I finally get to go home for vacation for 10 days. awesome. Now if only I can get through this week without going crazy.....

EOM (End of May)

Song: MIA-Paper Planes

Started the work week on Tuesday with a night shoot in Brooklyn Heights. I came into the office around noon to meet the photographer who wanted me to show him how to get to Fulton Ferry landing in Brooklyn on his bike.

We were joined by his assistant and friend and rode across the Brooklyn Bridge. I had told him earlier in the week about this art piece called the "Telectroscope" that was supposed to be an underground telescope looking straight to London.
We found it and hung out for a while using white boards and dry erase markers to communicate with the people in London.
The photographer had arranged for his brother and sister to be on the other side, and after a short wait, sure enough, his brother and sister appeared and we awkwardly stared at each other before getting bored and just called them on the phone. Really cool concept and great presentation but its essentially just Skype without an audio feed. We then rode our bikes a few blocks over to Brooklyn heights and waited for production to arrive on our shoot.

A Comp I did of the Financial District while waiting.....

It started pouring down rain as soon as we set up all the gear (outside...awesome) but we had a decent amount of pop up tents and tarps, so we hunkered down until the storm passed. We only had two hours to shoot 8 shots, and we were running the jolly green giant of generators which was actually red, ridiculously loud, and definitely isn't green in the environmental sense. Brooklyn Heights is one of the nicest (read: Most Expensive) areas in brooklyn, and since the sun doesn't go down till well after 8 this time of year, we didn't even start shooting till 9. Therefore we only had an hour to shoot as our exit deadline was 10.
Once the art director asked for fog machines I knew we had a disaster on our hands. Huge lights, smoke machines, loud generators......BK heights was not happy with us after about 20 minutes of shooting. Needless to say when 10 pm rolled around we only had 4 shots done. We squeezed another two out with the big lights and rocked a Richardson/Testino style on camera flash (Lumidine) for the remainder. Once we were stacked and packed I had the option of taking the train back to the willy B or riding aimlessly through brooklyn on my bike hoping to find a street I recognized. I chose the latter being that it was midnight and we had a 9 am call time the next morning. Picture a lanky white kid riding his mountain bike with through some not so safe areas of brooklyn, riding with no hands because he has to google his location on his iphone, at 12:30 at night on a tuesday. I laughed. Then almost got hit by a buick.

The next day we hubbed out of industria studios and shot all along the cobble-stoned streets of the west village. It was pretty uneventful until we saw Keanu Rieves. I said that I know Kung Fu. He didn't look amused. The shoot was really chill and went by quickly.

The day after, we drove up to Bear Mountain to shoot a Ad-itorial for Japanese Vogue. Beautiful location, lame clothing, long day. My printer broke (as usual) which always sucks, and we ended up shooting to card because of how rocky it was up there
Not the best shoot day I've had. It ended up being a 16 hour day with travel, and we had to shoot a cover for Time magazine the next day. Then we were flying to spain the day after that. One of those weeks I suppose. However I still managed to play a few games of Dice on Mark Seliger's rooftop, and ended up winning 45 dollars. Too bad it was gone after one round of big buck hunter and some drinks.

Stay tuned for the Spain story, and a song by my new favorite band....MGMT.

don't buy Levi's

Yea they were brand new. literally. I'd had them for less than 24 hours. Memorial day weekend blog coming as well as a night shoot in dumbo, and the streets of the west village. Off to Spain on Sunday, so expect those too. I gotta head to uniqlo or something....

NYC in the Spring

I just have to say, that the ONLY time I recommend coming here is in the spring. The weather is perfect, the summer tourist crowds haven't hit yet, and everything is just great.
I went on a three hour bike ride with my friend Anthony down through battery park, up the westside highway to Harlem, back down through the park, barely survived the ride down 5th ave, and then back to Williamsburg. Couple that with a long night of partying outdoors with friends, and a hungover movie eating really shitty food at the theater while skipping out on work makes for a great week.

Throw in Bar hopping the next night with the BMX gang, riding all over brooklyn on pegs/handlebars and at least one person crashing in front of our favorite bar and you've got a really great week. It really is the best time to be here.
Song: Digital Love by Alphabeat (Daft Punk Cover)

So we went to LA sometime last week, rocking a ridiculously early flight out there on saturday morning. I flew solo which I always enjoy and slept for most of the flight out. Upon arrival I was greeted by a friendly SUV driver from the middle east who after mistaking my friendliness as an invitation to talk politics, led into literally a 45 minute rant about how the world is ending. His wife cheated on him but got everything in the divorce(after seeing his temper i'm not surprised), people are too dependent on gasoline (I actually agree with that), everyone is straying from religion (finally!), and a black man can't be the president (Really? cause I'm pretty sure he will be and it will be a good thing). Don't get me wrong, he was a nice guy but I really don't want to talk about that kinda shit when I'm driving to my hotel with a total stranger (thats his head in the picture below).

After a rather intense, absurdly traffic hindered (on a saturday at noon?) drive I arrived at the sunset towers hotel which was nothing short of spectacular. I had a great suite with two rooms and a great bathroom. It overlooked the pool, which I wasted no time in enjoying. I had dinner and drinks with my friend Katrina which was fun but I was exhausted and had to get up at 6 the next morning to head out to the desert.

We awoke really early to head to location, and I drove the two hours it took to get out of there. Two hours quickly turned to 3.5 when while following the client (I wasn't leader...not my fault) they missed the exit and drove 30 miles past it. Our looping back solution (1st assistant....not me again) ended up taking considerably longer, and we arrived at location around 11. No big deal as we shot with HMIs and setup wasn't difficult. The shoot was at this crazy "outdoor studio" (oxymoron I know) with these big sloped white walls and pools of blue water. Very graphic and cool. It was mothers day so we all emailed light test pictures to our moms and the day had a great vibe.

Driving back after a 12 hour day was pretty exhausting, but I managed to muster up enough strength to open up my mini bar and crack some Ketel One with Katrina, before heading out to our usual drinking spot in Hollywood....Barney's Beanery. I seem to remember it being karaoke night and I seem to remember jaeger bombs because of the fatigue. Thats pretty much it. Oh, also I think Nachos may have been involved.

The next morning I awoke to the hotel reminding me I had to check out at noon, a legitimate concern because I think I dropped off some client disks and prints at 2 am and probably couldn't speak coherently. I packed my shit and waiting in the lobby for 4 hours....waiting for my car. Awesome. Thanks production...I love taking a 8 pm flight home from LA. Especially when I have to be on set in Inwood the next day at 7 am. Needless to say I tried to sleep on the flight (unsuccessfully) and slept at the office once back in NY. I got a record 3 hours of sleep before I had to get up for call time the next day. Or same day I guess if you want to get technical.

Oh LA....I really do despise you. Croatia got cancelled due to some customs issues, but fortunately we're headed to an island off the coast of Spain instead. I promise some good posts from there....still working on better music, I'm having a bit of a dry spell on new stuff. Time to clean the office.....this shit is getting ridiculous.
